Agroecology is a social movement rooted in Indigenous and smallholder farmer tradition, that's gaining traction among food and climate funders - to the tune of $44 billion a year.
But with money comes the dynamics seen in so much modern philanthropy: funding that comes with strings attached, favors distant NGOs, or is driven by agendas from afar.
Seeding Power is an editorial project exploring power dynamics in agroecology funding, in partnership with Agroecology Fund. We'll explore how funders can support this work in ways that honor its roots in food sovereignty, land rights, and community self-determination – as a movement, not just a method.
The Agroecology Fund is a pooled, multi-donor grantmaking fund and learning connector which supports agroecology movements globally to strengthen resilient, healthy food systems; uphold rights; conserve biodiversity; and address climate change through sustainable, low-input agriculture.
Proximate is an independent media platform covering movements for participatory problem-solving. We look at the news through the lens of money: how it’s given away, how it’s invested, and how it’s distributed by government.
We are a fiscally sponsored project of Movement Strategy Center.
